Martha Bratton was born in Rowan County, Noth Carolina. She died near Yorkville, South Carolina, in 1816. Her husband, William Bratton. He was a colonel in the revolutionary army. In June,1780, british cavalry under Captian Huck went to her house and threated her with death. They wanted to know where William was. Even though she a reaping hook was held to her throat, she was bold. On the same evening Colonal Bratton arrvied with 75 men and took the loyalist by surprise, and they defeated them. Martha took care of the men from both sides. Before the fall of Charleston, the governor Rut-Leadge intrusted Martha to care the quantity or powder. she blew it up when they were in danger of beign catured by the British.
